Shimla was called Simla previously. It is the Capital City of the State of Himachal Pradesh of India
The name Shimla is derived from the Hindu Goddess Shyamala Devi, an incarnation of Hindu Goddess Kali.
Queen of Hills
It has been a favourite Hill Station of the British during the Colonial Era because of its hilly location and Mediterranean climatic conditions. And during the British Period it was the Summer Capital of India right from 1864 and they used to call it the ‘Queen of Hills’. Also it was the Capital of the Undivided Punjab State from 1871 until the construction of the City of Chandigarh. When the new State of Himachal Pradesh was formed in 1966 it became its capital.
Location
It is located in the north west Himalayas at an altitude of 2128 metres. It is located approximately 115 km from Chandigarh and 365 km from Delhi. It is draped in forests of pine, oak, etc. It has pleasant summers and cold, snowy winters.

Shimla has various Places of Tourist Interests. However its Main Places of Tourist Interests are The Mall, Christ Church, Jakhu Hill, etc.
The Mall
It is the Main Shopping Street of Shimla. It houses many restaurants, clubs, banks, bars, tourist offices, etc. The Gaiety Theatre is also situated here. The Ridge and Scandal Point are the two main meeting points of the Mall.
Christ Church
It is the Second Oldest Church in North India. It has a very majestic appearance and inside there are stained glass windows which represent faith, hope, charity, fortitude, patience and humility.
Jakhu Hill
It is 2 kms away from Shimla located at a height of 8000 ft. It is the Highest Peak of the Area and it offers beautiful view of the town and of the snow-covered Himalayas. At the top of the Hill you would find an old temple of Lord Hanuman which is also the home of countless playful monkeys waiting to be fed by visitors.
Shimla State Museum
Opened in 1974 it has a large collection of miniature Pahari Paintings, sculptures, bronze and wooden carvings, textiles, jewellery, etc, of the region.

Kalka is the Nearest Railway Station, 96 kms.
